Chief Justice of Kentucky John D. Minton Jr. is the speaker at Union’s 2010 commencement ceremony. Minton will also receive an honorary degree from the college.

Chief Justice of Kentucky to Address Union College Grads

The Honorable John D. Minton Jr., chief justice of Kentucky, will address Union College graduates and receive an honorary degree at the college’s 2010 commencement ceremony on Sat., May 8.
 
Commencement will be held in Union’s Robison Arena at 10:30 a.m.
 
The Honorable John D. Minton Jr. is the fifth chief justice of the Supreme Court of Kentucky.  He was sworn in during a formal investiture ceremony on June 27, 2008, after being elected to the post by his colleagues, the justices of the Supreme Court of Kentucky. At the time of his election, he was the first new leader of Kentucky’s judicial branch in a decade. Prior to his election, he served two years of an eight-year term as a justice on Kentucky’s Supreme Court.
 
As chief justice of Kentucky, Minton is the executive head of the statewide judicial system.
 
Minton’s career also includes serving as judge on the Kentucky Court of Appeals, judge of the Warren Circuit Court, chief judge of the Green River Region and as a lawyer in private practice.
 
Minton has been recognized for his leadership in forming the Warren County Drug Court and for his commitment to law-related education programs. In 2003, the Kentucky Bar Association honored him with its Outstanding Judge Award.  He is active in the United Methodist Church through lifelong membership at Broadway United Methodist Church in Bowling Green and through lay leadership positions in Kentucky and the nation. He is a member and past president of the Bowling Green Rotary Club and has served the boards of the Western Kentucky University Student Life Foundation and Shakertown at South Union, Ky.
 
Though born in Cadiz, Ky., Minton has spent most of his life in Bowling Green.  He earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in history and English from Western Kentucky University in 1974 and a law degree from the University of Kentucky College of Law in 1977. He is also a graduate of the National Judicial College.
 
This is the 117th commencement for Union, which was founded in 1879.  As part of the 2010 commencement ceremony, Union will confer degrees on 395 graduates of the undergraduate and graduate programs.
