Union College faculty member Hugo Freund is the winner of a Fulbright Scholar Award. He will spend the 2010-2011 academic year researching Appalachian Mountain communities in southeastern Canada. Freund’s wife, Susan Isaacs, is a past winner of the Fulbright.

Union Faculty Member Wins Fulbright Award

Hugo Freund, Ph.D., a Union College faculty member, has won a Fulbright Award through the U.S. Fulbright Scholar Program to conduct research based in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Freund is a professor of social and behavioral sciences at Union. The Fulbright Award will allow him to undertake a “transnational study of communities living in the Appalachian Mountains of Canada and the United States.”

This is the first Fulbright Award won by a member of the Union College faculty while employed at Union. Freund’s wife, Susan Isaacs, Ph.D., earned a Fulbright before coming to Union College. Isaacs is a professor of English and communication.

Freund, who teaches Appalachian studies courses, says the research project will help “enlarge our understanding of what we mean by the Appalachian Mountains and provide a larger frame for Appalachian studies.”  The Appalachian Mountains, Freund notes, extend across the Canadian border as far as Nova Scotia and Newfoundland. As part of the project, he will explore how Appalachian Mountain communities in southeastern Canada compare to those in the United States.

Dalhousie University in Halifax will serve as the host institution for Freund.
