Union Grad Wins National Teaching Award
Melissa Evans, a 1993 graduate of Union’s education program, has earned a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, according to a statement released by the White House yesterday.
Melissa teaches seventh-grade science at Corbin Middle School. In October, she was named the 2010 Kentucky Middle School Teacher of the Year.
A press release issued by the White House explains that the award is given each year to the best pre-college-level science and math teachers from across the country. Winners receive a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for an awards ceremony and related events.
In all, 103 teachers were selected for the honor among nominated seventh-through-twelfth grade math and science teachers in the United States.
In the White House’s announcement, President Obama emphasized the importance of math and science to “America’s strength and competitiveness,” and called the award winners “inspirations not just to their students, but to the nation and the world.”
In addition to her recent awards, Melissa was a finalist in the National Geographic Hands-On Explorer Teacher Challenge Awards program and received a Fund for Teachers 2009 Summer Sabbatical. She is a resource teacher for the Kentucky Teacher Internship Program (KTIP) and for student teachers from Union College, the University of the Cumberlands and Eastern Kentucky University.
