Timeless Tales Now Open for After-School Tutoring

Union’s Timeless Tales tutoring program is already underway for fall and is better equipped than ever to offer after-school homework help to local children.

“We have more volunteers than anyone can remember the program having before,” said Samantha Sayre, Union’s student coordinator of Timeless Tales.

The program is offered every Monday through Thursday from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. at the Timeless Tales Reading Center in Union’s Weeks-Townsend Memorial Library. It is offered free to area schoolchildren, who should bring homework and study materials to each session.

Timeless Tales serves children in first through eighth grades. Participants are tutored by Union students, who help tackle math problems, reading and language arts, science and more.

Though school children and their parents appreciate help with homework, Sayre says the program actually focuses on literacy.

“We want to help foster a love of reading and learning in students, while enjoying a fun and supportive environment.”

Timeless Tales was created by a Union College Bonner Scholar student who was concerned about literacy. Initially, the program focused only on reading and literacy. It has since evolved to offer tutoring in other subjects. However, at the end of each tutoring session, Sayre and other Timeless Tales volunteers lead activities meant to enhance literacy.

Timeless Tales is one of three children’s programs available through Common Partners, Union College’s service learning organization. Common Partners also hosts the Children’s Art Program and Bulldog Buddies, a mentoring program that focuses on fitness.
