Top Recruit Tells ESPN She ‘Found Happiness’ at Union College
Rebecca Gray, a top national basketball recruit and Kentucky’s former Miss Basketball, tells ESPN she “found happiness again and it is at a place called Union College.”
Gray made the comment in a blog entry published today on ESPN’s HoopGurlz Web site. The HoopGurlz blogs follow the paths of several high-profile women’s basketball recruits. Gray is an intern for the Web site and submits regular entries.
A Scott County, Ky., native, Gray was recruited by the University of North Carolina (UNC) after high school. She eventually transferred to the University of Kentucky (UK), in part to be closer to friends and family. She played with UK for one season—a record-setting one for the team—before transferring to Union College.
Gray’s blog entry, “Embrace Where Life Takes You,” delves into her reasons for leaving a nationally recognized program to join the Union College community, add golf to her schedule and leap so far outside her comfort zone.
“Even when people are telling you what they think you should do or you feel pressured to do something, stop and think about your life and your happiness,” Gray said. “You might as well have fun and put yourself in a situation where you can succeed with people around you that have your back.”
