Minorities Day to Explore ‘The Status of Women in KY’

Eleanor Jordan of the Kentucky Commission on Women will speak at Union College on Oct. 26.

Union College’s annual Minorities Day lecture will feature guest speaker Eleanor Jordan and her presentation, “The Status of Women in Kentucky.”

The event is on Tues., Oct. 26 at 7:00 p.m. in the upper level of the Patridge Campus Center. There is no charge to attend and the lecture is open to the public.

Jordan is the executive director of the Kentucky Commission on Women, a position appointed by the governor. She is the first African-American to hold the position.

As part of her work, Jordan consults with and advises the governor and the governor’s cabinet on matters pertaining to and of interest to women. In 1996, she was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives. Her political and advocacy work has earned regional, state and national attention. Jordan was named Public Policy Advocate of 2009 by the National Association of Women Business Owners, was included in the book “Kentucky Women,” and has been profiled on the BBC, Oxygen and MTV television channels.

The annual Minorities Day event is sponsored by the sociology program in the college’s Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences.
