Union’s Spring Convocation to Honor MLK and Barbourville Junior Woman’s Study Club

Union College’s 2011 spring convocation will feature a special performance and pay tribute to the Barbourville Junior Woman’s Study Club for their decades of service to the local community.

Union’s spring convocation is Thursday, Jan. 20, at 9:30 a.m. in Conway Boatman Chapel.

Spring convocation is held each year in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The event highlights Dr. King’s legacy by featuring guest speakers who address issues related to social justice, civil rights, non-violent protest and the spirit of the late leader’s message.

This year’s spring convocation guest is E.P. McKnight, an actress with dozens of film, television and theater credits to her name. She has appeared in television’s “ER,” “Once and Again,” “All My Children,” “One Life to Live,” “Guiding Light” and “Passions,” and in films such as “Zodiac,” “Rat Race” and “The Princess Diaries.” McKnight is also a poet, writer, producer and the host of “Breaking Through with E.P.,” a cable talk show.

McKnight’s many theater credits include two one-woman productions, one of which will be performed at Union’s spring convocation. “I Question America—Legacy of Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer” explores the life and contributions of Fannie Lou Hamer, a lesser-known heroine of the civil rights movement. Researched, written and performed by McKnight, the play tracks Hamer’s path from plantation worker to national-level advocate for voting and civil rights, including the dangers and violence she experienced along the way.

McKnight’s dramatization of Fannie Lou Hamer’s story has drawn praise across the country for reclaiming and sharing an important piece of the nation’s civil rights history.

For the third consecutive year, Union’s spring convocation will also include a tribute to an area organization that embodies the spirit of service represented by Dr. King. The 2011 honoree is the Barbourville Junior Woman’s Study Club. The organization’s president, Susie Dunaway, will be on-hand to represent the club as it receives a commemorative plaque and citation from the college. Previous honorees are KCEOC and the Lend-A-Hand Center.
