McFarland Named Acting Union College President
The Union College board of trustees named Dr. Thomas McFarland acting president last week following the announcement of President Edward de Rosset's indefinite leave of absence.
"Tom's blend of professionalism and dedication to Union is vital in assuring that the business of the college moves forward and remains focused on our students," said board Chairman Paul Isaacs, who announced the appointment on Aug. 8. "We are confident that he will provide outstanding leadership to the college."
"Union is a strong, focused academic institution," said McFarland. "We have made great strides in recent years, and that progress has been a team effort. I am honored to be part of this team and am humbled to have been entrusted with such a key leadership role. Together, our good work will continue."
McFarland, a 1969 graduate of Union College, has served the college in various roles for more than 25 years, most recently as vice president for academic affairs.
McFarland first joined the ranks of faculty and staff at Union in 1985 when he became both director of alumni affairs and assistant music professor. Over the course of his near 26-year tenure at Union, he was promoted to associate and full professor of music and later, chairman of the music and fine arts department.
McFarland holds a bachelor's degree in music education from Union, a master's in music performance from the University of Akron and a doctorate in musicology from Kent State.
Union College is a private liberal arts college related to The United Methodist Church and located in Barbourville, Ky.
