This academic year at Union College marks the first that a highly-celebrated scholarship for study in math and sciences has been awarded.

Eight Union students will receive a total of $60,000 from the Cumberland Valley Area Undergraduate Learning Teams. Locally, Kayla Lambert and Cassie Tye, both 2011 graduates of Knox Central High School, are among the first class of recipients.

The CVAULT program offers scholarships to students majoring in biology, chemistry and mathematics and provides financial, logistical and educational support to promote student success. Additionally, it prepares students for graduate study or field-based careers.

The CVAULT program is funded by the National Science Foundation, which encourages the study of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Union officials were first notified of winning this competitive grant in the spring of 2010.

Lambert and Tye, who are studying biology and pre-dentistry respectively, are among more than 200 incoming freshmen to begin college this fall at Union. This marks the seventh consecutive year of sustained enrollment growth.
