Network Access
Access to network resources is available from within each of the buildings on campus, including individual dorm rooms. To access, you must have an Internet-ready computer equipped with an ethernet card, approved virus protection, and the appropriate cable. If you need help getting on the network, contact the Computing and Technology Help Desk at extension 1626, email helpme@unionky.edu, or submit a work request online.

Network Logons and Storage
All publicly-accessible computers on the Union College campus require users to log on to the network. Each student at Union, upon arrival, is given a unique username and password that enables him or her to logon to any student-accessible computer on the campus network. This username and password is the same as that used for email. Each student is also granted storage space on the network. This space can be accessed by logging on to the network, and opening the Z: drive located under "My Computer." Union College encourages students to save their work on the Z: drive because it is secure and more reliable than a floppy disk. The Z: drive is also backed up daily and can be accessed from any computer on the campus network.

Where to save files:

There are basically four different locations where you may save your files, when using a public PC:

  • Z: Drive - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED METHOD- Located on the server. This location is YOUR area only. You may access this drive from any Windows2000 or WindowsXP computer on the campus network by logging on and choosing the Z: drive located under MY COMPUTER.
  • My Documents - Files saved in My Documents can only be retrieved by the user who saved them, and they are stored locally on the computer that they were using at the time. WARNING: DO NOT CONSIDER MY DOCUMENTS AS A LONG TERM STORAGE AREA FOR YOUR DOCUMENTS. COMPUTERS ARE PERIODICALLY RELOADED AND THE INFORMATION IN MY DOCUMENTS WILL NOT BE SAVED.
  • Floppy Disk (Drive A:) - Most computers have a 3½ in. floppy drive that can be used to open and/or save files to and from a 3½ in. floppy disk. WARNING: FLOPPY DISKS ARE NOT DEPENDABLE MEDIA STORAGE DEVICES. FILES SAVED ON A DISK SHOULD ALSO BE PLACED IN ANOTHER LOCATION IN CASE DATA ON THE DISK IS CORRUPTED BY STATIC ELECTRICITY, MAGNETIC FIELDS, SPILLS, ACCIDENTS, OR ANY OTHER MEANS OF DESTRUCTION.
  • USB Flash Drive - You may use a USB Flash Drive to store documents on a temporary basis. Please note, this media should be cared for in the same manner as a Floppy Disk.
