A picnic with Bluegrass music is scheduled for next week to celebrate two important Union College events: the upcoming presidential inauguration and the launch of a student government-sponsored lake renovation project.
The picnic will be on Tuesday, April 23, at 5:00 p.m. at Lakeside on Union’s campus. It will begin with a brief ribbon-cutting ceremony, followed by a heritage picnic featuring music by Flickertail Holler. The meal will include traditional southern food in honor of Appalachian heritage. The event is free and open to the public.
Keeping with the Appalachian heritage theme, Flickertail Holler, featuring Union alumnus Ben Jenkins on banjo, will perform throughout the evening. The band most recently performed at the Redbud Festival. According to their Facebook page, their mission is “to represent Bluegrass and Acoustic music to the best of our abilities, while maintaining the traditions and stretching the genre to create a youthful approach to a traditional art form.”
The ribbon-cutting ceremony celebrates work already completed in the lake renovation project. That includes of all phase one, which brought to Lakeside an outdoor recreation area, a boat and fishing dock, a pavilion, gas grills and a fire pit. Most recently, parts of phase two were completed, which includes a fountain aeration system designed to protect the lake’s ecosystem. Phase two is expected to end with a full-size outdoor basketball court. Plans for phase three include a walking track around the lake, a meditation area and an outdoor classroom area.
The evening’s events are part of a weeklong celebration that will end with the inauguration of Marcia Hawkins, Ph.D. as Union College’s 19th president. The inauguration ceremony will be Friday, April 26, at 1:30 p.m. in Robsion Arena on Union’s campus. More events occurring the week of inauguration can be found online at unionky.edu/inauguration.
