Union College announced changes in the communications department with Jay Stancil taking over as the Director of Campus Communications and John Gatto becoming the Director of Sports Communications.
All of Union’s communications efforts will now be housed under one umbrella with Stancil at the helm, and Campus Communications will fall under the purview of the Office of Advancement.
“I am very excited about the experience Jay and John bring to the table,” said Jessica Bergman, the Vice President for Advancement. “Both have been recognized nationally for their work, most recently with the NAIA. I know Jay will continue to bring that level of expertise to the office of communications, while John will continue to do the high quality work we have come to know and expect from sports communications.”
The change in positions and organization of Union’s communication efforts are effective May 1.
Stancil has served as Union’s Director of Sports Communications since August of 1999. Throughout his career, Stancil has received numerous awards, earning 45 NAIA-Sports Information Directors Association (NAIA-SIDA) Publication Awards including three first-place honors and one Best Cover. In addition, he placed first in the NSCAA Writing Contest in the Deadline/Game Story Division in 2005 and third place in the CoSIDA's Fred S. Stabley Sr. District IV Writing Contest in 2006 and 2007.
In 2010, Stancil received the Clarence "Ike" Pearson Award, which is the NAIA-SIDA's highest honor and recognizes its honoree for accomplishments and service performed over a career.
“I am grateful for this new opportunity given to me,” said Stancil. “I am very appreciative to (Union) President Marcia Hawkins and Jessica Bergman for placing their faith in me. Having spent 15 years here already, Union holds a special place in my heart, and I want to do all I can to let the world know what a unique community it is.”
Stancil also serves as the president of NAIA-SIDA and is also the Information Director for the Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC).
Gatto came to Union in October of 2010, serving as the Assistant Director of Sports Communications. During his tenure, he has served as the primary media contact for the Bulldog programs of men's and women's soccer, men's and women's cross country, cycling, men's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's track & field and softball.
“I am excited to take over the Sports Communications Department here at Union,” said Gatto. “I look forward to continuing the fine work our student-athletes, coaches and fans have come to count on, while also advancing our publicity efforts even further over the next few seasons. I am thankful for the opportunity and can’t wait to get started.”
In addition to his work with Union athletics, Gatto served as the media coordinator for the 2012 NAIA Women’s Golf National Championship in Greeneville, Tenn., and has worked all three of the NAIA Baseball National Championship Opening Rounds in Kingsport, Tenn. Gatto has served the AAC in a variety of capacities, having worked the men’s and women’s basketball tournaments the past two seasons as well the baseball and softball tournaments the last four.
“John has done an outstanding job in his role as Assistant Director of Sports Communications, and I look forward to see where he takes the department,” said Stancil.
“As we combine offices, I am eager to see how the collective synergy will benefit all phases of communications,” he added.
