Union College will offer a bachelor’s degree in exercise science beginning next fall.
This addition to the Wellness, Human Performance and Recreation Department at Union completes the “missing link in our program,” said professor Jeff Goodman, Ph.D.
The standout feature of the new major is that it requires a science core similar to nursing and athletic training requirements. None of the other majors in the department do so.
While this is not a pre-professional program, the core is similar to pre-med “and will enable students who complete this program to be better equipped to enter a profession such as physical therapy,” Goodman said. He noted that other lines of work could include a strength and conditioning coach or personal trainer.
The major will be open to all students, including incoming freshmen, in the fall of 2014.
