Justin Kitts named the new Dean of StudentsJustin Kitts has been named the new Dean of Students at Union College. Kitts began the post officially on July 1, having previously served the school in the role on an interim basis. President Marcia Hawkins announced the promotion to the Union College community on June 30.

“Justin has done a remarkable job in the past few months and has great plans for the future of student life,” Hawkins said.

Kitts said he is excited to be able to take on the role in an official capacity and ready to begin work to find students various opportunities outside the classroom.

“At Union, our goals for student development are to make sure we are providing opportunities for our students that are not only enjoyable, but that they can use to find success in a career as well,” Kitts said.

Kitts said he is beginning to meet with staff to engage the department in strategic planning and preparations for the upcoming semester.

“I want to analyze what we have been doing and then look at what we do well, what we do really well and modify the things that need a rebirth here on campus,” Kitts said.

Kitts is excited about offering students a new leadership program called Atala, which represents the region’s Cherokee heritage and mountainous landscape. He says the program will be one of the first steps for many students into a world of leadership possibilities. Throughout the course of eight-weeks, students selected to the program will engage themselves, and each other, to unlock their leadership capacity. Those skills will then be used to help the Union College community and to set the tone for leadership throughout their lives.

“I have always been passionate about leadership development and seeing how it can change a student’s life,” Kitts said. “My early experiences in college served as a springboard for my future decision to pursue a degree in student development as well as follow my passion to work with students."

Kitts is a 2007 graduate of Lees-McRae College in North Carolina, where he earned a Bachelors of Arts in English Literature. In 2010, he earned a Master of Arts in College Student Development from Appalachian State University.

Kitts came to Union in 2013 where he started his tenure as an admissions counselor. From August 2013 until July 2014 he served as Director of Campus Life; then accepted a position as Director of Housing and Residence Life, a role held until January 2015.  Kitts took on the role of Dean of Students on an interim basis in late January 2015.
