Pursuit of the Golden Can 2019

Union College is collecting non-perishable food items in hopes of bringing home the Golden Can trophy for the 8th time.

The Pursuit of the Golden Can, an annual food drive initiative created in 2011 by Kentucky Harvest Southeast, is a competition between Union College and neighboring University of the Cumberlands. Whichever school collects and donates the heaviest weight wins an award. The last Golden Can award went to the Bulldogs with over 30,000lbs donated in 2018.

In addition to the competition between both schools, there is also an in-house competition between buildings on campus at Union. Whichever building raises the highest poundage of donations receives a trophy. Last year, Speed Hall took the award with more than 1500lbs of food.

“Union College prides itself on community involvement. Serving this area is part of my mission statement,” said James Becknell, Dean of Student.

“Union is grateful to be a part of such a great event and help so many people.”

Becknell urges community members and local businesses to collect food and contribute to the initiative too. Monetary donations are also accepted and are used to purchase food locally for the program.

You can turn in donations to Becknell or at a Golden Can bin inside any building on campus between now and November 15, 2019.

The food collected will be donated to local churches, shelters, families in need, and even Union students.
