With the release of results for the 2017-2018 New Teachers Survey from the Kentucky Educational Professional Standards Board (EPSB), the Union College Educational Studies Unit is once again being recognized for excellence in preparing educators for service in classrooms across the state.

The EPSB New Teachers Survey is administered every other year to gather data on the perception of quality of educator preparation programs in Kentucky and to gauge attitudes about institutional training. First year teachers, their principals, student teachers, and cooperating teachers who hosted student teachers during the 17-18 academic year, were given 13 questions to answer regarding how well prepared the student teacher or first year teacher was to make a positive impact on P-12 student achievement. Responses were given based on a 10-point score, with 10 being the highest rating possible.

The average percent of Kentucky colleges/universities receiving a combined (all response groups) rating of 10 on at least one of the 13 questions was 25.6%. For Union College, the average percentage was 36.4%, which exceeded the state average by nearly 11%. In fact, the Union College percentage for scoring a 10 on each question ranged from 33.3 to 46.7%, easily exceeding the overall state average. Finally, the ESU’s average score of 36.4% places it in the top three of postsecondary education programs receiving a rating of 10 on one or more survey questions, behind only Centre College and the University of Pikeville.

Dr. Jason Reeves, Dean of the ESU, gives credit to ESU faculty, staff, and campus partners for this most recent success story of the ESU.

“At the end of the day, all of us in the ESU and our college-wide partners want to know the students we send out to lead P-12 classrooms are confident in their abilities and can make a measurable difference, no matter how big or small, in every child’s life. If this is our reality as professionals but more importantly as a faculty and staff committed to the Union College mission of service, we can take pride in a job well done. These results show that we have much to be thankful for,” said Dr. Reeves.
