Union College is now offering music classes for toddlersUnion College’s Department of Fine, Performing and Media Communication Arts is now offering music classes for toddlers through Musikgarten, the leader in early childhood music education.

“Musikgarten at Union” offers toddlers, ages 15 months thru 3 years of age (along with their grownup), the opportunity to explore the fun and magic that is music. The songs, rhythm games, jingles, drums, movement to music, and much more, were carefully chosen with your toddler in mind. Music is at the core of each class, but toddlers will also learn and grow in their communication and socialization skills, fine and gross motor skills, impulse control, and spatial awareness.

Virginia Gay Gandy, Associate Professor of Music and Certified Musikgarten Instructor, is directing the program, as well as teaching the classes.

"I am excited for what this program will mean for Barbourville and surrounding communities,” Dr. Gandy said. “Not only will the toddlers have fun and delight in making music, they will also be absorbing the building blocks of music."

Children are inherently musical and the Musikgarten program helps children to express their musical talent as well as gather developmental skills through the musical experience.

“It is my hope to expand this program in the future to include classes for four and five-year-olds and eventually classes for infants through 14 months,” Dr. Gandy added, emphasizing the importance of music in childhood development.

Musikgarten was introduced in 1994 when Dr. Lorna Lutz Heyge merged her music education background with the experience and input of childhood education specialist Audrey Sillick. There are hundreds of Musikgarten studios in North America and the experience is being adapted in countries throughout the world.

“Musikgarten at Union” begins on August 18 and continues for 12 weeks. Parents can choose between classes held on Thursdays from 5:30-6:00 or on Fridays from 11:30-12:00. Tuition for the fall term is $189 and includes all classes, a music pack of Cd’s with songs from each class, an accompanying booklet and rhythm sticks. Please call if you are interested in a monthly payment plan or the sibling discount. Classes are held in the Fine Arts center on the Union College campus.
