Union College professor participates in 'Honor in Service' conference at VMIRussell Sisson, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of History, Religious Studies, and Languages at Union College, participated in a panel discussion of service-learning at a recent conference at Virginia Military Institute.

“Honor in Service” was the theme of the Fifth Annual Leadership Conference hosted by VMI’s Center for Leadership and Ethics, which annually hosts conferences on topics of national and international importance. A variety of speakers and presenters discussed ways that colleges and universities prepare educated, honorable, and steadfast leaders in all walks of life.

Dr. Sisson addressed “Discipline-Based Service-Learning in General Education Courses” during his presentation. He shared unique examples of Union College’s students fulfilling course requirements as they also provide service to the local community.

A poster session at the conference provided opportunities for participants to share their experiences integrating community service into existing courses or creating new courses connected with ongoing service programs.

Dr. Sisson has been a member of the faculty at Union College for 18 years of his 25-year career in higher education.
