Union to honor graduates during events May 6 & 7

Commencement Union College will honor the 2016 graduating class during two ceremonies scheduled for the first weekend in May. Union will host a Baccalaureate service on May 6 and a Commencement ceremony on May 7. Dr. Thomas C. Clark, a native of Knox County, will serve as the 123rd Commencement speaker.

The 2016 Baccalaureate service will take place on Friday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in the Conway Boatman Chapel on Union’s campus. Baccalaureate is a traditional spiritual service held to celebrate the completion of an undergraduate academic career.

The guest speaker for the event will be the Reverend Mark Gibbons. Rev. Gibbons has served as a pastor in the Kentucky Conference of the United Methodist Church in Lexington, Walton, Lawrenceburg and Shelbyville. He is presently the Superintendent of the Owensboro District of the United Methodist Church.

Commencement exercises for the 2016 graduating class will be held on Saturday, May 7 at 10:30 a.m. in the John M. Robsion Jr. Arena on the campus of Union College. The service will be the 123rd Commencement program in the history of Union College. This year 211 students will be recognized for their academic accomplishments and applauded as new graduates of Union College.

The featured speaker during Commencement will be Dr. Thomas C. Clark. Dr. Clark actively volunteers in the not-for-profit community in New York and across the nation. He has received Honorary Doctorates from two schools in recognition of his support of education in Appalachia. He is a graduate of Knox Central High School, Duke University and holds an MBA from Harvard University. Dr. Clark served as an active duty officer for the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam era, retiring holding the rank of Commander. In his banking career of three decades, Dr. Clark served as Division President, Managing Director and Corporate Chief Credit Officer of the US Trust Corporation. He currently serves as Chair Emeritus of the Board of Trustees of Union College.
