It is with great sorrow that Union College shares the news of the passing of Dan Louis Sullivan ’57. A member of the Union College Athletic Hall of Fame, Dan Sullivan was recognized for many accolades during his time at Union, including service as his class president, being named Mr. Union, and graduating 3rd in his class. As a member of the baseball team, Sullivan was the team captain his senior year – the same year that Union would win the KIAC state championship.

After his time at Union, Sullivan began a career as a football coach, before moving into education administration. Rising through the ranks from Principal to Assistant Superintendent to his final position of Superintendent, Sullivan’s career in education spanned 46 years, including 25 as Superintendent. In 2001, he was recognized as the Outstanding Superintendent by the Kentucky Educational Development Corporation.

Throughout his life, Sullivan remained an ardent supporter of Union College. Giving of his time, talent, and treasure, Sullivan served on the Board of Trustees. His tremendous support over the years has been felt all over campus, but perhaps his largest impact was his leadership in the creation of an indoor hitting facility. The Dan L. Sullivan Indoor Hitting Facility, adjacent to the Baseball Field, is a testament to Dan’s love for Union College, Athletics, and Baseball.

“I open the Dan L. Sullivan Indoor Hitting Facility to the community almost daily,” noted Union College Baseball Coach Bart Osborne. “Hundreds, if not thousands, of kids have had the opportunity to hit indoors and become better athletes. It really opens up the sport of baseball to a wider audience, and I know that Dan Sullivan would be pleased to see it so well utilized. It goes beyond Union College and has a dynamic impact on the community. I am saddened by his passing and I will personally miss him.”

“The Union College softball program is very sorry to hear of the passing of former Union College Baseball alumnus Dan L. Sullivan,” remarked Coach Nicole Thompson. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the Sullivan family during this time. Dan helped our program and the softball community have a place to ensure the success of present and future Bulldog softball players. We are so thankful for the indoor hitting facility.”

“He was a keen philanthropist, who took a special interest in people,” added Mr. Brian Strunk, Executive Director for Advancement. “Throughout the years, in addition to sending students to Union, he would also send along financial support quietly to help those who needed help paying for school. The indoor hitting facility that bears his name is a fitting tribute to a man who wanted to support others.”
