Childers Takes on Expanded Alumni Relations Role

Maisie Nelson • October 1, 2026

Union Commonwealth University alumna Terra Childers ’04 is taking on an expanded role focused exclusively on alumni relations, helping the university strengthen relationships with graduates and create new ways for alumni to remain connected to their alma mater.

Childers joined the University in October 2025 in a split role supporting both Admissions and the Office of University Relations. She has recently transitioned to a full-time position in alumni relations, where she will lead outreach and initiatives designed to keep Union graduates connected to the university and one another.

A 2004 Union graduate, Childers continued her education by earning a master’s degree in 2007 and Rank I certification in 2008. Since joining the alumni relations office full-time, Childers has hit the ground running, reaching out to alumni, sharing university updates and learning more about the experiences and accomplishments of Union graduates. She is also leading new efforts to tell alumni stories through initiatives such as Alumni Spotlight and Alumni on the Rise, highlighting graduates and the ways they are making an impact in their careers, communities and beyond.

Childers’ work also extends to connecting alumni with current students. She is responsible for identifying and coordinating mentors for UCU’s Presidential Fellows, creating opportunities for students to build meaningful relationships with alumni and learn from their experiences.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to focus my time on building relationships with our alumni and helping them stay connected to Union,” Childers said. “I know how special the relationships and experiences we gain here can be. I want our alumni to know that their connection to Union doesn’t end at graduation, and I hope to create more opportunities for them to stay involved, share their stories and continue being part of this community.”

In the months ahead, alumni can expect to see continued growth in these storytelling and engagement efforts, along with new opportunities to connect with UCU and one another. Childers will also take a leading role in planning upcoming alumni events, including UCU’s Homecoming, scheduled for Oct. 16-17.

“Having Terra in this role is incredibly valuable to our alumni and to the university,” said Maisie Nelson, Vice President of University Relations. “As an alumna herself, her perspective allows her to connect with alumni in a really authentic way. She’s already finding new ways to bring alumni back into the life of the university and, importantly, connect them with our current students in ways that create meaningful experiences for both.”

Childers’ expanded role reflects UCU’s continued focus on strengthening its lifelong relationship with alumni. Through outreach, events, communications and storytelling, the university is creating more ways for graduates to remain part of the Union community long after graduation.

UCU alumni are encouraged to share their updates with Childers. Whether you have a new job, a family milestone, a recent accomplishment, a community achievement or simply a story you’d like to share with your Union family, contact Terra at tchilders@unionky.edu or by calling 606-546-1277.
