Union College announces Presidential Laureates and Dean’s List for Spring 2016

Union College recognized this week the students who have been named Presidential Laureates or named to the Dean’s List for the 2016 spring semester.  A total of 32 students were named Presidential Laureates. 134 undergraduates were honored with recognition among the 2016 Dean's List.

Union College 2016 Co-Valedictorians

Union College conferred degrees on 211 graduates during the 2016 Commencement held on Saturday, May 7. The event was the 123rd Commencement ceremony held on the college’s historic Barbourville campus.

Union, community partners complete Monarch waystations

Union College and several partners from throughout the local community have completed a project to improve butterfly habitats on the college campus. Students from Union College, Barbourville Independent Schools and the Bell County Technology Center installed plants and garden benches for Monarch butterfly habitats at two locations – Union’s Center for Civic Engagement and the Turner Outdoor Center. The project was student led, but funded through a grant from Kentucky PRIDE.

Union College recognized nearly 40 students for outstanding academic achievement at its annual Honors Day Convocation ceremony held in the Conway Boatman Chapel on the college’s Kentucky campus.

Union to honor graduates during events May 6 & 7

Union College will honor the 2016 graduating class during two ceremonies scheduled for the first weekend in May. Union will host a Baccalaureate service on May 6 and a Commencement ceremony on May 7. Dr. Thomas C. Clark, a native of Knox County, will serve as the 123rd Commencement speaker.

Documentary filmmaker to present After Coal at Union College

A documentary that profiles eastern Kentucky’s transition from a coal-based economy will be featured on the Union College campus on March 29. The documentary filmmaker, Tom Hansell, will host classroom discussion on the topic and be available during the showing of After Coal.

Community Garden meeting planned for March 22

According to the “signs” around Barbourville, the Spring planting season is almost here. Local residents can sign up to join the city’s community garden on Tuesday, March 22, during an informational session held at the garden site.

Union College students campaign for financial aid support

Students at Union College have joined a statewide campaign urging legislators to support two key financial aid programs. In an effort led by student ambassador Danielle Cosby, several Union students are joining together to support the #Aid4Us campaign established by the Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities. The campaign involves students throughout the state that are urging Kentucky legislators to provide greater support to the College Access Program (CAP) and the Kentucky Tuition Grant (KTG).

PRIDE awards $500 to Union College

Eastern Kentucky PRIDE announced today that Union College had been awarded $500 through the PRIDE Environmental Education Grant Program, which is made possible by a grant to PRIDE from Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky (TMMK).  Union College will use the grant to build two monarch butterfly waystations on campus.

Union College’s Emily Morgan Harless has been selected as the recipient of an Appalachian College Association (ACA) Colonel Lee. B. Ledford Scholarship. Harless joins students from 14 other ACA schools who were honored with the scholarship.

Trinque saves professor from flood

Sean Trinque '11, Union Cycling Coach, recently sprung into action becoming a local hero. Trinque saved a Union professor from drowning in floodwaters after heavy rains covered a local roadway.

Union Trustee book subject of “Conversations that Matter” campus forum

“A Short Book About Killing,” a book by Union Trustee Dr. Sonya Jones, will be the basis for the first in a series of public forums at Union College – Conversations that Matter – to be held February 22. The event will also serve as a book launch for the college community.
