UCU donates over $6,000 in equipment to Middlesboro City Pool

On June 2, 2026, Union Commonwealth University made an in-kind donation of with an approximate value $6,000 in equipment to The Middlesboro Community Center’s pool. The City Pool is a favorite gathering spot for the Middlesboro community, offering free entrance, private swim lessons, and event rentals.

University President Dr. DJ Washington explained, “Union’s role is to constantly grow in its support of the Appalachian region, its communities, and our neighbors, with a strong commitment to serving local students.”

Interim Director of External Relations & Presidential Initiatives, Sarah Wahlstedt affirmed Dr. Washington’s commitment to service saying, “As someone who grew up swimming in our local summer league and now serves as both a (head coach at Knox Central High School) and parent in the swimming community, this donation is especially meaningful to me.” Wahlstedt, went on to say, “For generations, Union has served the region not only through education, but by investing in partnerships that strengthen local communities and create opportunities for residents and students alike. The donation is one example of the university's mission to support the people, organizations, and communities that make Appalachia strong."

Executive secretary for the City of Middlesboro Jessica Brown and Cannonball Swimming Academy owner and head coach Dara Carmack welcomed Union as a new class of lifeguards finishing training for opening day. During their visit, Union’s team learned about the many ways the pool serves as a valuable community asset. For instance, although the pool is typically available by reservation on Fridays, Brown coordinated dedicated time for Carmack to provide low-stimulation swim lessons for individuals with autism.

“The City of Middlesboro appreciates Union’s generosity and support of the Middlesboro City Pool. These supplies will help us enhance both safety and recreation for our community. We’re especially excited that the life jackets are already being put to good use by children and families,” Brown said.

At Cannonball Swimming Academy, they’re committed to “Teaching students how to safely engage and enjoy the water for a lifetime.” Regarding the new equipment, Carmack added, “It was wonderful to see Union bringing their lifesaving equipment to the community of Middlesboro! The items were put to immediate use. When we each bring something to the table, everyone eats!”

Cannonball Swimming Academy will be offering lessons in Middlesboro during June and July and year-round at the Corbin Wellness Center. Lesson registration can be completed on their website, cannonballacademy.com.

On its opening day, June 3rd, the pool saw more than 200 visitors, eager to beat the heat and try out the new equipment. Among the weekly attendees are summer school students, families, and various camp groups throughout the summer. Brown mentioned that parents took to social media to express gratitude for the donated equipment.

Local parent Amanda Carroll beamed that the pool opened with “nice upgrades to the pool, painted deck, life jackets out for the kids, pool noodles.” She added that because of the donation, kids were able to take the initiative to grab life jackets without being directed.

The equipment donated included:

·     65 pool noodles

·     53 life jackets

·     46 kicking boards

·     24 pairs of water aerobics dumbbells

·     24 pull buoys

·     22 swimming pool inner tubes

·     21 pairs of fins

·     16 diving masks

·     13 snorkels

·     12 aqua jogs for water aerobics

·     6 pairs of paddles

·     6 swim lap counters

·     2 monofins

Dr. Washington added, “Union will be consistently exploring other partnerships with residents and businesses in Bell County, similar to the increase in partnerships in Knox County that the institution has created.” The university is proud to support organizations that encourage unity and provide for our communities.

Over this season, Middlesboro expects increased pool usage and is planning future programs, additional staffing, and continued improvements. For those planning a visit, the pool is located at 705 N Petersborough Ave, Middlesboro, KY 40965
