Union Commonwealth University (UCU) has announced the inaugural cohort of its Presidential Fellows Program, a new leadership initiative designed to prepare students for success through mentorship, career development, and hands-on professional experience.
Launched in partnership with Rural Up, an Eastern Kentucky-based nonprofit focused on expanding career pathways in rural communities, the program connects students with paid internship opportunities and alumni mentors while providing structured leadership development throughout the semester. This work is made possible through funding from the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC)’s POWER Grant and the Commonwealth of Kentucky’s KY GRANT program.
The Presidential Fellows Program reflects Union’s commitment to preparing students for meaningful careers while strengthening connections between the university, its alumni, and regional partners.
Each Fellow is matched with an internship aligned with their academic interests and career goals, while also participating in leadership seminars and mentorship opportunities. A hallmark of the program is its strong alumni mentorship component, drawing primarily from Union’s “50 Under 50” class while also engaging other accomplished alumni. Together, these mentors provide guidance and professional insight to Fellows as they begin their careers.
“We are proud to launch the Presidential Fellows Program and invest in the next generation of leaders,” said Dr. DJ Washington, President of Union Commonwealth University. “This program represents the very best of Union, bringing together students, alumni, and community partners to create opportunities that will have lasting impact.”
UCU extends its sincere appreciation to the following businesses and organizations for partnering with the university to provide internship experiences for our 23 Fellows:
Appalachian Regional Healthcare (ARH) Barbourville, Drs. Smith, Owens, & Franklin Dentistry, PT Pros Physical Therapy & Sports Centers, Knox County Judge Executive’s Office, Knox County Veterinary Services, Inc., Knox County Health Department, Highland Heritage Realty, Trinity Family Health, and the Dr. Marcia Hawkins Boys and Girls Club at Union Commonwealth University, along with campus departments at UCU.
These partnerships play a critical role in providing students with real-world experience while strengthening the workforce and communities of the region.
The following students have been selected as members of the inaugural Presidential Fellows cohort:
