Raigan King — Setting a new standard

Biology major, homecoming princess, student ambassador, resident assistant, member of the science club — these are some of the ways junior Raigan King is thriving at Union College. When she completes her bachelor’s degree next year, she will be the first in her family to do so. She will also be on the way to making her dream career a reality.

“My family is proud that I’m in college and pursuing my dreams,” Raigan says. “Union has molded me into a better person and developed me in the best way possible.”

Raigan graduated from Pineville Independent High School in 2021, where she served on student council, played basketball, and was a member of the honors service organization, beta club. A well-rounded, high-achieving student, she was offered a scholarship to play basketball at Union, and when she visited, she says “everyone was so nice and welcoming” that she felt at home.

“I wanted to go somewhere small because my high school was small, and I felt like a bigger school would be really overwhelming for me,” Raigan says. “I wanted to go somewhere close to home because I'm a homebody, and I love my family.”

She accepted the offer and soon learned that Union offered a pre-professional track in veterinary medicine. “Well, that makes this place even better,” she recalls thinking.

Union’s partnership with a school of veterinary medicine is one of various pre-professional agreements that give students like Raigan a unique advantage. When she graduates next year, she will have a shot at one of five seats reserved just for Union students at the vet school.

“I have always had a passion for animals and always knew I wanted to work with them,” she says. The pre-professional agreement gives Raigan a clear path to achieve her dream, and Union’s small student-faculty ratio provides the support needed to ease the application process.

Another thing Raigan appreciates about Union’s small size is the opportunity to really get to know her professors and peers and to have their support as her interests and needs evolve. “It's such a small campus. I really love that because I can talk to anybody,” she says.

As Raigan has advanced in her degree, she has realized she wants more time to focus on academics and less on athletics. She talked to her teammates and coach and found that she was respected and supported in her decision to take a break from the team. Coach Aleka Carr told her she was “always welcome back” and that she could stay on the scholarship because she is a good student.

“I do miss basketball, but it's better for me and my career path to take a break right now,” Raigan says.

When asked what she would say to other first-generation college students, Raigan says, “Set a new standard in your family and have multiple generations go to college. It is very nerve-racking and intimidating at first, but Union offers so many resources and so many people that help you get to where you want to go in life. … It will all be worth it!”

“Union has brought me friends that I plan on having as bridesmaids in my future wedding,” Raigan continues. “It has brought me experiences that I wouldn't get at a bigger school, and I'm thankful for that. I really love it here!”

After 21 years as the chaplain of Union Commonwealth University (UCU), the Rev. David Miller is retiring this month. Since his first ministerial appointment in 1984, he has served as the pastor of several Kentucky congregations, has taken on leadership roles in multiple Kentucky organizations, and has led countless campus programs and groups dedicated to student development. He says supporting students to find their personal calling, however, has been the highlight of his career.

Leadership is about more than a title, it's a commitment to personal growth, professional excellence, and something greater than yourself. For many, this may mean embracing new challenges or simply striving to make a meaningful impact. At Union Commonwealth University, however, leadership also means investing in the potential of others by creating opportunities for growth, mentorship, and collaboration at every level.
