Union Commonwealth University formally inaugurated Dr. DJ Washington '03 as its 20th president on Friday, September 19, in a ceremony that honored the institution’s history while celebrating a bold vision for its future.

Delegates, dignitaries, and alumni traveled to Barbourville to witness the historic occasion. Union’s international students helped lead the academic procession carrying the flags of their home countries, reflecting the university’s diverse student body. The ceremony featured alumna Margaret Pridemore ’76, who sang the National Anthem; an invocation from Bishop David Graves, Resident Bishop of the Kentucky Annual Conference; and music by Union Harmony and the St. James Missionary Baptist Church Mass Choir, Dr. Washington’s home church in Tennessee.

The inauguration program also included greetings from church, government, and community leaders. Among those who brought well wishes were Dr. Tamara K. Gieselman, representing the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry and University Senate; Ms. Marcia Dixon, Director of Barbourville Tourism; and The Honorable Mike Mitchell, Knox County Judge Executive. Donna McClure offered greetings on behalf of U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell, while Tamra Wilson brought remarks on behalf of U.S. Congressman Hal Rogers. Additional greetings came from State Representative Tom O’Dell Smith and Mason Dyer, President of the Association of Kentucky Independent Colleges and Universities.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. David Joyce, Union’s 17th president, who mentored Dr. Washington during his student years.

“More than two decades ago, I had the privilege of getting to know a remarkable young man who stood out for his intellect, his leadership, and his vision for his peers,” Joyce said. “That young man was, of course, D.J. Washington. Today, Union welcomes him home as its president. He is the kind of leader who will inspire unity – a man of vision and humility, business acumen and compassion, above all someone who cares profoundly about students.”

In his inaugural address, Dr. Washington reflected on his journey as a first-generation college student and Union alumnus, calling the moment “deeply personal.”

“As I stand before you today, I am humbled by the weight of Union’s history and energized by the promise of its future,” Washington said. “This is not my journey alone—it is our shared journey, a partnership between students and faculty, alumni and trustees, church and community. You and me. Together, we will ensure that Union remains a place where barriers are broken, bridges are built, and lives are transformed.”

Washington concluded with a charge to the community: “Our calling is clear, our vision is strong, and our future is within reach. The best chapters of Union’s story are yet to be written, and we will write them together.”
